Sunset at Mauna Kea
Not often do you have an opportunity to capture a sunset from 9000' above sea level. Mauna Kea - the tallest mountain in the world - is about an 1 1/2 hour drive from Waikoloa Beach Resort. The views from here are amazing, making you feel as if you could just walk out onto the clouds that often fill the valley below. The sunsets at this time of year are spectacular because the sun is far enough south to see it set on the ocean instead of behind the mountain.

Hi Teri,
Great sunset! And I just bought the SIngh-Ray 3 stop reverse grad that I can't wait to try out on scene like that! Maybe I'll get a chance in the next few days. I hope so! In the meantime, have fun over there!
Thanks Cynthia,
Always fun to have new toys. I used the fill light option in Lightroom to bring back some of the foreground detail. Didn't add too much to make it look unrealistic.
Can't wait to see the images you come up with.
You are welcome Teri! And I am about to go out this afternoon to play with some of those toys. I'll be going to a place within Henry Coe State Park called Hunting Hollow. The name fits the place too. It is sheltered by a nearby hill so it is in shade much of the day. There is a little creek that flows through it whenever there is enough water for that to happen. I expect some pools from rain last month but no flow. And there are a variety of trees, some that produce nice fall color as well as gorgeous old oaks with all this moss hanging down. It can be a challenge to find the great compositions there but I like a challenge. And I expect to make use of that fill light option in Camera RAW for some of these pictures. We'll see!
Oh, and tomorrow I may go to the coast, perhaps to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse for some sunset pictures and I expect that 3 stop reverse grad is going to come in useful there! In the meantime, have more fun over there!
